The Raymond Theatre is one of the City of LA's oldest landmark theaters.
It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Raymond is also better known in recent years as Perkins Palace, which was one of LA's former top concert venues.Pasadena developers AJB purchased the Raymond Theatre in 1987 and slated it for redevelopment.
In response, the theater's former manager and concert promoter Gina Zamparelli formed Friends of the Raymond Theatre, to protect the historic Raymond Theatre against redevelopment.Over the past 15 years, Friends of the Raymond Theatre has grown to an organization with 3,000 supporters worldwide with people leading the campaign in California, New York and Australia.Celebrities such as David Lee Roth, Oingo Boingo and Slash (Guns N' Roses/Slash's Snakepit) have given their support as well as Pasadena Heritage, the Los Angeles Conservancy, the California Preservation Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.In the last 15 years, Friends of the Raymond has been successful in stopping all major redevelopment proposals which would have severely altered or demolished the Raymond Theatre.
These projects included a proposed office building in 1987, a modernized nightclub in 1992, and a hotel proposal in 1994.In 1999 AJB once again proposed redevelopment of the Raymond Theatre, this time to an apartment/retail complex.

From 1999 to 2003 Friends of the Raymond Theatre has led a Herculean four-year fight through the City hearing process, winning every City hearing in this period of time.During these hearings, Friends of the Raymond gave every opportunity for the City of Pasadena to allow the Raymond Theatre to continue as a live venue.
Financial feasibility reports, business plans and buyers, a national promoter, a professional management team and corporate sponsorship to implement the plan were some of the resources that were brought to the project.Regardless of all the alternatives there were to protect the Raymond Theatre, and against massive community and global outcry, the City of Pasadena granted the developer AJB permission to redevelop the Raymond Theatre to an apartment/retail complex.Friends of the Raymond Theatre responded by filing a lawsuit against the City of Pasadena and the developer (AJB) in February 2002.

It was originally named Jensen's Raymond Theatre and in the 1950s was renamed the Crown Theatre.

For decades it presented vaudeville and in later years, movies and plays.The Raymond Theatre reopened in 1979 as the concert venue Perkins Palace(1979-1990) and became one of LA's most successful concert venues.
It featured acts such as Van Halen, Tina Turner, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Phil Collins, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N' Roses, Gladys Knight and many more.
It was the backdrop for numerous movies including This is Spinal Tap, The Bodyguard and Pulp Fiction.Many records and videos were recorded live from the theater including Phil Collins, Motley Crue, Leon Russell, Blue Oyster Cult, Dave Mason, Joe Walsh and Whitney Houston.
Also a television program was broadcast live from the theater, "Rock and Roll Tonight, Live from Perkins Palace" which aired on Channel 7 in Los Angeles.
